The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) was established in 1950 by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, independent India’s first Education Minister with the sole aim of strengthening relationships between India and other countries. This they have achieved by playing an important role in the educational sector by offering scholarships to foreign students to study in Indian universities and other recognized institutes of higher education and learning.
The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship is an annual scholarship by the India Government for students all over the world to pursue undergraduate, postgraduate and higher courses programmes at Institutions / Universities in India. This is to strengthen bilateral and cultural relations and bring a mutual understanding between India and partner countries.
The ICCR has so many scholarship schemes such as the General Scholarship scheme, Commonwealth scholarship scheme and so on, but our focus is on the African Scholarship scheme.

Eligible African Countries Under the African Scholarship Scheme
The following African countries are eligible for the ICCR scholarship under the African Scholarship Scheme:
Algeria, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Cape Verde, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Comoros, Congo (Republic of), Djibouti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea (concurrent from Nairobi), Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Kenya, Libya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Malawi, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, South Sudan (Republic of), Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sao Tome & Principe, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Number of Scholarships Awarded to Africans Each Year
The Council offers 900 scholarships to the African countries above annually. Although, the number of scholarships awarded each year varies and the implementation of African scholarships is by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) on behalf of the Ministry of External Affairs of India.
How to Apply for the ICCR Scholarship for Africans
Application documents are sent to the Indian Embassies in one’s country, the Embassies then shortlist and send the recommended names to the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in India to award the scholarship to nominated candidates.
What does the ICCR Scholarship for Africans Cover?
The ICCR scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, living allowance and one round trip air ticket.
Eligibility & Documentations for the ICCR Scholarship for Africans?
To apply for the ICCR scholarship, you must have satisfied the following criteria:
✔Students must have completed Secondary school education with a certificate as proof. ( For undergraduate level)
✔Good academic record
✔ Candidate must possess a four years certificate from a recognized University ( For Master’s Level)
✔ students applying for doctoral courses should provide a synopsis of the proposed research area
✔ Performing Art students are required to enclose a video/audio of their recorded performance.
✔ English Language Proficiency/TOEFL or IELTS test scores ( a compulsory 500-word essay in English has been introduced)
✔ No application for courses in MBBS/MD and Dentistry/Nursing is accepted for admission.
✔ Students who have never studied in India before are prioritized.
✔ The candidate must be a citizen of one of the above countries
✔ Candidate must meet the age requirements( applicants must be between the age of 18-30)
