After sitting for the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (W.A.S.S.C.E), it is important you know how to check your result when it is released. It is also more important to understand how to obtain the W.A.S.S.C.E Diploma. While the online result checker validates your grades, the Diploma is a tender from the West African Examinations Council (W.A.E.C) that you have graduated from a secondary school within the West- African Territory.
The West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (W.A.S.S.C.E) is usually conducted and supervised by the West African Examinations Council (W.A.E.C) and appropriate Ministries of Education. The West African Examinations Council was established in 1952 following a proposal by the Jeffrey Report to set up a regional examining board to harmonize and standardize pre-university assessment procedures in the then British West-Africa. Ahead of its establishment, the Governments of Ghana (then Gold Coast), Nigeria, Sierra Leone and The Gambia enacted the West African Examinations Council Ordinances in 1951. Liberia became the fifth member of the council in 1974.

How to Obtain your W.A.S.S.C.E Diploma/Certificate
After you have confirmed that your W.A.S.S.C.E result has been released via the Result Checker, you can start making plans to lay hold of your W.A.S.S.C.E Diploma. Though most people call it a certificate, it is officially recognised as a Diploma.
If you sat for the W.A.S.S.C.E for School Candidates (May/June) Examination, your Diploma would be available for collection from your school. You might be requested to pay a fee before receiving it from your Vice-Principal (Academics) or anyone in charge.
If you sat for the W.A.S.S.C.E for Private Candidates (January/February or November/December) Examination, you would have to get your W.A.S.SCE Diploma from the W.A.E.C office. You should also know the office in charge of your jurisdiction to avoid unnecessary expenses. For instance, the WAEC office at Ikorodu is in charge of the Lagos Island jurisdiction while the one at Jibowu, Yaba serves Lagos Mainland.
