The Erasmus Mundus programme supports European top-quality Master’s Courses and enhances the visibility and attractiveness of European higher education in countries across the European continent and beyond. It is the most coveted European Financial Aid Programme anyone would want to be a part of, a very popular one at that for students primarily looking to pursue their Master’s and Doctorate Degree programme. This cause supports a large number of students and they have a variety of courses for participants to choose from.
The programme is an initiative of the European Education and Culture Executive Agency, and there are about three primary categories which include the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, Intra-Africa Scholarships, and Erasmus+. We shall take our time to dissect the three programme categories to aid your understanding of the subject.

- Conclusion: Applying to the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Programme
1. The Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Scholarship
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters are high-level and integrated study programmes, at the master level. They are designed and delivered by an international partnership of higher education institutions (HEI). They involve at least three HEI from three different countries, of which at least two must be EU Member States and external countries associated with the Programme (previously called Programme Countries).
By supporting these jointly recognised Master’s degrees, the European Union aims at fostering excellence and internationalisation of the participating institutions. There are also scholarships for students to take part in these prestigious programmes; the master’s programmes are offered to the best-ranked applicants worldwide.
Note: A Joint Masters Degree programme is gotten from the collaborative efforts of two or more participating universities in Europe.
Eligibility for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Scholarship
Students who have completed their first (Bachelor’s) degree from anywhere in the world are eligible to apply. This implies that you must have a Bachelor’s degree (first degree) or be in your last year of undergraduate studies and graduate before the master’s programme commences.
You may also apply if you demonstrate a bachelor’s equivalent level of learning. This must be officially recognised, according to national legislation and practices, in the degree awarding country. For instance in Nigeria, the law equates the Higher National Diploma with a Bachelor’s Degree, hence, a holder of the Higher National Diploma in Nigeria is thus eligible to apply.
There are four categories of applicants that can benefit from this scholarship. The first is from any of the participating countries. The second category applies to applicants from any of the partner countries up to 400 kilometres away from their study destination. The third category of applicants is those from any of the partner countries less than 400 kilometres from their study destination while the last category considers applicants from non-participating countries or non-partner countries or partner countries more than 400 kilometres away from their study destination (This category gets the highest financial support and this is where most African students fall under).
Expectations from the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Scholarship
The programme covers the period of your study, research, placement activities, thesis preparation and defence, in line with the requirement of the Joint Masters Degree programme. The latter comprises at least 2 study periods in 2 countries, which must be different from your country of residence. The Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Scholarship offer different study tracks to meet this condition.
The Scholarship is offered for a duration of 1 to 2 academic years after fulfilment of the required ECTS credits for the programme of choice (60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits).
Students should not be bothered about the expenses involved as the European Education and Culture Executive Agency would be responsible for the cost of a student’s participation in the programme, travel fares and living allowance. The breakdown of how the scholarship is funded is explained below:
i. As a scholarship holder, you are entitled to a living allowance of 1000 €/month with the exception of scholarship holders studying in their home country, that is, students residing in program countries.
ii. A scholarship holder from a partner country while studying in another partner country cannot receive the living allowance for more than three (3) months.
iii. Scholarship holders residing in program countries receive 1000 €/ year.
iv. Scholarship holders residing in partner countries less than 400 kilometres from the coordinating institution receive 2000 €/year.
iv. Scholarship holders residing in a partner country up to 4000 kilometres from the coordinating institution would receive a yearly stipend of 3000 €.
v. A one-time contribution of 1000 € to the settling-in cost for students residing in a partner country.
vi. A contribution to the travel cost of scholarship holders.
vii. The scholarship body takes care of the bill for tuition and compulsory insurance coverage, although, most of the time this fee is deducted from your other allowances.
At the end of the programme, students would be awarded either a joint degree (i.e. one single degree certificate issued on behalf of at least two higher education institutions) or multiple degrees (i.e. at least two degree certificates issued by two higher education institutions of the consortium).
Why you Should Apply to the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Scholarship
• Getting any of these types of certificates at the end of any of the courses available increases your chances of getting a well-paying job. The certificate is not only a plus, you also get to meet other people from around the world and also work on amazing projects.
• As a student in pursuit of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degree, you are mandated to study in at least two countries where you meet different professionals, this helps to build more experience and make your qualifications stand out.
• It is not all rosy though, acquiring visas, visas in the sense that students undertaking a joint degree would be required to move between two (2) countries, at least and the process of undergoing different immigration processes or abiding by different policies might be strenuous. Not to talk of the different cultural differences from travelling from place to place. In all, you are certain to learn new customs, and languages and study different ways people live.
• The European Union covers all your expenses and there is an allocated monthly stipend, one that if spent wisely would keep you going till you receive the next.

2. The Intra-Africa Scholarships
The Intra-Africa scholarships by the European Union are offered to support students and staff mobility in Africa. However, unlike the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Scholarship, this scheme offers Doctoral Programmes in addition to the Master’s option. This implies that students can study either Masters or Doctoral programmes at select African Universities.
The previous intake for the scheme was in 2020, prior to the Coronavirus outbreak and there has been no call for applications from the European Union regarding the scheme. However, you can check with partnering institutions if the programme is on.
Eligibility for the Intra-Africa Scholarships
To apply for the Intra-Africa Scholarships, certain conditions have to be met. First, you are expected to be a national and resident of an African country. Asides from that, you must have completed your first (Bachelor’s) degree if you are interested in the Master’s Programme. If you intend to apply for the Doctorate option, you should be in possession of a Master’s degree or almost completed the programme.
Expectations from the Intra-Africa Scholarships
There are no indications on the European Union’s website regarding what the scholarship would entail. We are certain for sure that the scholarship contains the cost of tuition. What we are not sure about is whether it covers the travel cost, accommodation and feeding.
Regarding this, we would like you to check partnering institutions for more details regarding what benefits the programme provides.

3. Erasmus+
The Erasmus+ programme entails short-term courses for personalities across various sectors and operations. These personalities include individuals, students, pupils, staff, youths etc.
Individuals
For nearly 30 years, the EU has funded the Erasmus programme, which has enabled over three million European students to spend part of their studies at another higher education institution or with an organisation in Europe.
Erasmus+ brings such opportunities to all – students, staff, trainees, teachers, volunteers and more. It’s not just about Europe or Europeans either – with Erasmus+, people from all over the world can access opportunities.
Students
Studying abroad is a central part of Erasmus+ and has been shown to have a positive effect on later job prospects. It is also a chance to improve language skills, gain self-confidence and independence and immerse yourself in a new culture.
Staff (teaching)
With Erasmus+, opportunities are available to spend time teaching at an educational institution abroad. These opportunities are available to both staff working in the education sector and to individuals working outside the sector invited to share their knowledge and experience.
Staff (training)
With Erasmus+, training opportunities are available to staff working in education, both in teaching and non-teaching capacities. Training periods abroad can consist of job shadowing, observation periods or specific training courses abroad.

Pupils
Erasmus+ aims at making learning mobility a realistic possibility for any pupil in school education. The cultural understanding and language skills you develop through studying in another country can make it easier to find a job after your studies. The programme fosters the recognition of learning outcomes of pupils in mobility periods abroad.
Trainees
Erasmus+ helps you gain valuable experience in the workplace by supporting traineeships abroad. Erasmus+ support for traineeships is available for higher education students and recent graduates, as well as vocational education and training students, apprentices and recent graduates.
Adult learners
Erasmus+ aims at raising the participation of adults of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds in adult education, especially by fostering the participation of organisations working with disadvantaged learners, small adult education providers, newcomers to the Programme and less experienced organisations, as well as community-based grassroots organisations.

Young people
Erasmus+ is open to all young people, not just those currently enrolled in education or training. With Erasmus+, you can volunteer across Europe and beyond or participate in a youth exchange abroad.
